It’s a piece of advice yogis have given for thousands of years: take a deep breath and relax. Watch the tension melt from your muscles and all your niggling worries vanish. Somehow we all know that relaxation is good for us. Now the hard science has caught up: a comprehensive scientific study showing that deep relaxation changes our bodies on a genetic level has just been published.

What researchers at Harvard Medical School discovered is that, in long-term practitioners of relaxation methods such as yoga and meditation, far more “disease-fighting genes” were active, compared to those who practised no form of relaxation. In particular, they found genes that protect from disorders such as pain, infertility, high blood pressure and even rheumatoid arthritis were switched on. The changes, say the researchers, were induced by what they call “the relaxation effect”, a phenomenon that could be just as powerful as any medical drug but without the side effects.

More on this topic will be written soon.

INFLAMMATION

Stress leads to inflammation, a state linked to heart disease, arthritis, asthma and skin conditions such as psoriasis, say researchers at Emory University in the US. Relaxation (meditation) can help prevent and treat such symptoms by switching off the stress response. In this way, one study at McGill University in Canada found that meditation clinically improved the symptoms of psoriasis

BLOOD PRESSURE

A study at Harvard Medical School found that meditation lowered blood pressure by making the body less responsive to stress hormones, in a similar way to blood pressure-lowering medication. Meanwhile a British Medical Journal report found that patients trained how to relax had significantly lower blood pressure.

Meditation has long been lauded. Now science has shown that deep relaxation changes our bodies on a genetic level - for the better. Visit our website channelingmeditation.com. We are based in the Inner West in Sydney.

Irritable bowel syndrome
When patients suffering from irritable bowel syndrome began practising a relaxation meditation twice daily, their symptoms of bloating, diarrhoea and constipation improved significantly. The meditation was so effective the researchers at the State University of New York recommended it as an effective treatment.

Immunity - Relaxation and meditation appears to boost immunity in recovering cancer patients. A study at the Ohio State University found that progressive muscular relaxation, when practised daily, reduced the risk of breast cancer recurrence. In another study at Ohio State, a month of relaxation exercises boosted natural killer cells in the elderly, giving them a greater resistance to tumours and to viruses.

Fertility - A study at the University of Western Australia found that women are more likely to conceive during periods when they are relaxed rather than stressed. A study at Trakya University, in Turkey, also found that stress reduces sperm count and motility, suggesting relaxation through meditation may also boost male fertility.

The warmer weather has come our way here in Sydney and along with it, more new people have been brave enough to step out of their cosy homes to join us.

Thought it would be a good idea to list some of the points made by the new people joining our groups. Also what they would like to get out of meditation.

• Elena would like more peace and comfort in her life - 11 Aug 09
• Matt wants to be more relaxed and have more compassion - 18 Aug 09
• J wants clarity, energy and more focus in his life - 8 Sept 09
• Prab wants direction, employment and step out of his depression - 8 Sept 09
• Cat wants more energy and to rid herself of the depression and anxiety - 15 Sept 09
• Alice wants to be able to relax and be more positive in life. Also releasing negative thoughts - 15 Sept 09

As they continue with meditation, I will tell you about the great progress that will be made in their lives. Never ceases to amaze me at how powerful, good energy can be. The thought crosses my mind many times, why take drugs when most of the mental problems and ailments can be washed out of us through the high energies shared in meditation groups. Stay posted as I continue to add updates this blog on “The Benefits of Meditation”.

What is the meaning of life? by George Carlin comedian 70’s and 80’s

George Carlin Comedian

This is an awesome piece.  If you have not read it, take the time to read it now. GEORGE CARLIN (His wife recently died…and George followed her, dying July 2008) Isn’t it amazing that George Carlin - comedian of the 70’s and 80’s - could write something so very eloquent…and so very appropriate.

A Message by George Carlin:
The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider Freeways , but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.
We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.
We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.
We’ve learned how to make a living, but not a life. We’ve added years to life not life to years. We’ve been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We’ve done larger things, but not better things.
We’ve cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We’ve conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We’ve learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.
These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when
technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete…
• Remember; spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever.
• Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side.
• Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn’t cost a cent.
• Remember, to say, ‘ I love you ‘ to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you.
• Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again.
Give time to love, give time to speak! And give time to share theprecious thoughts in your mind.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:
Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

Still considering Zion Wildlife Gardens as a guided meditation tour destination.

Well it’s been two weeks back from my recent trip to New Zealand. It was a much needed break. Now, well, back into life in the city in Sydney. I was excited to get down to Rotorua from Auckland, to enjoy the geothermal spas and have taken some great natural footage whilst there. A local friend took us to a special place called Rainbow Mountain. This will be a must, when I get the meditation tours organised for New Zealand. Great way to decharge the stress from the body, all in half an hour. Nothing like being in a natural pool with temperatures of 39 degrees in the water, on a cold winters night looking up into the night sky to make a wish or two, while watching shooting stars above us. Will get a video uploaded soon once I edit the footage.

Stayed with friends at Piha where the movie “The Piano” was filmed. A beach with black sand. After that we made our way up to Whangherai to visit Zion Wildlife Gardens founded by Craig Busch. Unfortunately they would not allow me to use the video camera on site, but did allow us to use the digital camera, thankfully that Vanessa brought along. Here are some of the recent photos of the beautiful lions, tigers, cheetahs and panther they have on the grounds.

My friends and I did a meditation across the road, late afternoon before our visit to Zion the next day. As the sun was setting, towards the end of the meditation, we felt the great energy of the lions when they started to roar in the distance while the sun was setting. As if they were singing a tribute to the sun. It was such an awesome experience to feel those vibrations through our body.

The spot I will be choosing to guide the meditations will be in front of the white lion enclosure. They have the most beautiful energy I have ever felt. Unfortunately, while I was there, the marketing manager of Zion seemed to be caught up with a film crew, so we did not get a chance to meet. Will be in touch with her soon again, for further discussions. While Chris was guiding our tour, the lions started to roar within a meter and a half of us, and I really could feel the vibrations of the roar clearing my chakras. Most of all the solarplex and the heart chakras. It was an amazing experience, and something I would like to share with others. A great way to get people out of the stress of work and city life, into a sanctuary like Zion that Craig founded and to get connected to the spirit of the lion and tigers. I will continue to add more posts as my concept continues to develop. My efforts are to assist as many people that I can reach, to raise their vibrations and awareness of the great planet we live on, and to start to care for the wonders of nature, that are all around us, outside of our cities. Enjoy the photos.

“If the emotional blocks within each individual were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite” Senka

Why meditation?

healing hands, channeling

healing hands, channeling

Over the last two years I have been guiding my own meditation groups, as I was strangely enough pushed into it by a friend. I thought it was only going to be temporary, but when I saw the shifts in the energy within the students and the positive difference afterwards, well….I decided to keep it up. I’m guiding groups twice a week for now, as I run a small advertising, web design company during the working days. So, I guess you could call me a single white western female taking weekly notes on the benefits of meditation.

Where ever we are in the world, we will find a genuine teacher, or teachers, who can guide us along the inner path, to kick-start the process of meditation and deepen it. It is said that when the student is ready the teacher appears, a meeting characterised by a sense of recognition, or destiny. Ultimately, the real teacher is the inner guide, the wisdom that lies at the heart of each of us. The outer teacher points the way to the inner and introduces us. I will aim to capture the spirit of meditation and hopefully inform and inspire all who seek to understand more about it, through the real life accounts that I observe every week in my groups.

My meditation website is http://www.creative-grafika.com/meditation. By the way, please drop me an email. Would love to hear your comments. Either on the blog or email me at info@creative-grafika.com. Hear from you soon :0) Now, for the individual accounts.

Individual Accounts on the Benefits of Meditation

FLYN (FEBRUARY 2009) She came in for the first time last Tuesday the 3rd. She realised she had to invest time in herself, as she was apparently quite in late last year due to accumulated stress. Her energy felt chaotic, a little nervous and happy she came to the group. After I finished going through the chakras and giving everyone high positive energy, and it was her turn to share…she shared with awe. For the first time in a very long time she felt calm and peace within herself. She was about to cry and was so happy to have found that state of being again. It was great to see her smile and seeing her aura brighter and clearer. Will be good to hear of her experiences next week.

Flyn returned (10-2) and shared more good news. She found she slept well that night and felt she had extra energy for the next three days. By profession she is in the field of counseling and education. What she really noticed is that she stood her ground, voiced herself and guided others in an empowering way. They took her advice and found everything she suggested worked! I’d say Flyn’s aligned her chakras successfully and definitely cleared the throat chakra. In the third session, more has shifted. The healing is working on a deeper level now. I felt her heart was healing as much pain energy was being released in her third session of meditation.

Great news. She emailed me to let me know that she has slept well, she has had not strong pains occurring in her body, her thinking is clearer and work is not much effort. She wrote “I am starting to feel physically and mentally stronger and more focused. Thanks for all your help again.”

BEL (November 2008) When Bel started meditation, she looked really pale, lifeless and her lips were almost blue. Not sure what she has been through? She looked wiped out, from whatever experience she had. She was quiet in her nature and continued coming to our classes.

Within 4-5 regular classes each week, she changed for the better. The colour came back in her face, her eyes lit up and her lips were rosy red. Others could see the difference also and were amazed. The sun looked like it was shining from her face and eyes. I did not realise how beautiful she was before. She had connected with her soul power. By December, I found out she met a guy who was cooking for her almost every night. So pleased to hear she met someone nice and in a relationship I believe. She is still joining classes fortnightly these days and appears to be full of life everytime I see her. She has asked her friend to join her and that’s another great experience that I will share with you soon :0)

More experiences will be added soon.
